Turin (or Torino) is Italy's automobile capital. That's thanks to Fiat, which came of age during World War I, and now enjoys a virtual monopoly among Italian car manufacturers. Fiat employs tens of thousands of people Turin's metro area, which is home to around 1.2 million overall. Turin is centrally located on the Po River in northwest Italy's Piemonte (Piedmont) Region. Just outside the city center, the Baroque Basilica di Superga offers spectacular views over Turin with the Alps as a backdrop. Such natural beauty convinced Friedrich Nitzsche to spend his last productive years living and writing in Turin. During the late 18th century, three of Italy's greatest architects rebuilt Turin in late Baroque style. So the city bears surprisingly little evidence of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Turin's well designed city center is offset by sprawling, traffic-ridden suburbs that have grown up around the auto industry. Ah, yes, the famed Shroud of Turin... It's alleged to be the very cloth wrapped around Christ after his crucifixion. Well, carbon dating relegated the Shroud to "most remarkable forgery in history" status, and it's hidden from public view in a locked chapel. Yet, relics in Turin's National Historic Artillery Museum and various automobile exhibits are readily accessible to tourists.
