The canals in Dutch cities are world-famous; but Utrecht's unique sunken canals provide more than a wet conduit through the city. Utrecht has been the religious center for Holland for centuries. It produced the only Dutch Pope, Adrian VI, a short-lived 16th century reformist who enjoyed the papacy amere year before meeting his maker. His Gothic Paushuisje (Pope House) is a popular tourist attraction in Utrecht. The city's 14th-century cathedral, the Domkerk, has long been a focal point for worship and ceremony; and its tower holds the distinction of being the Netherlands' tallest church steeple, offering a dramatic view of the city below. Numerous religious orders established convents and monestaries in Utrecht; one, a former Carmelite convent,is now a museum tracing the history of Dutch Protestantism and Catholicism. And those with a bit of time on their hands will delight in visiting a former church in Utrecht that's now home to the National Museum from Musical Clock to Street Organ, acharming collection of everything from antique clocks to Dutch barrel organs. One of Holland's oldest cities, Utrecht dates back to 47 A.D., when it was founded by a Roman garrison on the banks of a Rhine tributary. But, despite its Roman roots, the cityis purely Dutch -- the Union of Utrecht, signed here in 1579, established the nation as the Dutch Republic.
