Yet, barely 60 miles from the Arctic Circle, the little port town of Akureyri, Iceland’s second-largest, manages to offer such mild weather -- along with some of the country’s best skiing, indoor and outdoor geothermal pools and the world’s northernmost 18-hole golf course. The area also offers hiking trails, botanical gardens and breathtaking views of the north coast’s fjords. The Visual Arts Center and Green Hat concert club present regular entertainment, and nearby Old Town is the site of several museums and buildings dating back to the 18th century.
