Its days of leftist thought and pacifism (especially during the Vietnam War) have evolved into environmental consciousness and political correctness. Even the new brewing company is touting that it will be the first eco-brewery. The owners: distant relatives of eco-patron saint, Aldo Leopold. Ann Arbor claims to buy more books, support more restaurants and use more Macintoshes per capita than any other city in the U.S. (Take that, San Francisco.) Its Web culture runs along these lines, with online guides to the nearest bookstores, Birkenstocks and plates of pasta. Detroit's big-city offerings are just fifty miles to the east. Ann Arbor gets most of its news from there, along with its dose of professional baseball. Still, hometown sports rule the day. The rallying cry: "Go Blue!"
