Bologna is an exciting town, but there's another reason why it's called "the electric" city. Since the 17th century, giant steps toward mastering electrical energy were taken here, including 1909 Nobel Prize winner Gugliemo Marconi's invention of wireless telegraphy -- a.k.a. radio communication. Situated at the foot of the Apennine Mountains, and home to a half million people, Bologna is the capital of north-central Italy's Emilia-Romagna Region. Originating as an Etruscan town in the 6th century B.C., Bologna became a European intellectual center with the founding of its University in 1088. Bologna's economy is driven by food processing, as well as footwear, textile, and publishing industries. Classical music composer Ottorino Respighi and film directro Pier Paolo Pasolini are noted native sons. Bologna is rich in medieval and Renaissance monuments like the Piazza Maggiore (town square), Fontana (fountain) del Nettuno, and leaning towers of Garisenda and Asinelli. Marbled sidewalks run past restaurants serving distinctive local cuisine such as tagliatelle and veal cutlet bolognese.
