Northern France and Champagne are sometimes overlooked among the many French provincial jewels. The millions of tourists who flock through the Channel's "chunnel" or its ports often make a beeline for Paris or points south. By far the largest city in northern France, Lille endured Flemish, Austrian and Spanish rule before passing into French hands for good in 1667. The Lillois assert a certain amount of Flemish regionalism, but they also maintain a French sophistication. Home to a lively cultural scene and the largest fine arts museum in France outside Paris, the Mus?e des Beaux-Arts, Lille is no rustic backwater. Lille's cultural hub is the busy Grand Square, now officially called place du G?n?ral-de-Gaulle after Charles de Gaulle, born in Lille in 1890. Guarded by a cannon-clutching D?esse (goddess) atop a giant column, the square houses some of Lille's most imposing structures, including the city's Opera house and the old commercial exchange, Vieille Bourse, built in 1653 to rival those of the Netherlands. Lille's caf?-lined place B?thune is the spot to find the robust cuisine of northern France. Coastal residents eat great quantities of fish, namely herring, while inland delicacies include tripe, smoked game, and exquisite cheeses that shatter the American concept of Brie. Throughout northern France, copious amounts of beer are consumed, but not only by the glass. Locals love to splash a little brew into their finest sauces.
